“I indeed baptize you in (with) water because of repentance [that is, because of your changing your minds for the better, heartily amending your ways, with abhorrence of your past sins]. But He Who is coming after me is mightier than I, Whose sandals I am not worthy or fit to take off or carry; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire. His winnowing fan (shovel, fork) is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clear out and clean His threshing floor and gather and store His wheat in His barn, but the chaff He will burn up with fire that cannot be put out.” — Matthew 3:11-12 (AMPC)

The Fire of God has a continual work to do in our lives. Many receive the fire, then fizzle out and go lukewarm over time. Jesus said that we shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit and Fire.

“But you shall receive power (ability, efficiency, and might) when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you shall be My witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends (the very bounds) of the earth.” — Acts 1:8 (AMPC)

There is one baptism, but many continual infillings. The Greek word to be filled is a continual action word in Ephesians 5:18:

And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery; but ever be filled and stimulated with the [Holy] Spirit. — Ephesians 5:18 (AMPC)

You must continually stay filled and rekindle the fire of God in your life as Paul told Timothy:

That is why I would remind you to stir up (rekindle the embers of, fan the flame of, and keep burning) the [gracious] gift of God, [the inner fire] that is in you by means of the laying on of my hands [with those of the elders at your ordination]. — 2 Timothy 1:6 (AMPC) It’s going to take a fight for you to stay on fire. The enemies of your life and the enemies of the anointing will come around you and try to get you distracted, tempted and offended. They will try to steal your passion, stop your vision and put out your fire.

Once you have been touched with the fire of God, things that are not right in your life will begin to come to the surface. At this point, you will have a choice to make. Will you let this touch become a lasting change by allowing God to expose and burn out the chaff, or will you run and hide and go back to your old ways? This is the main reason why many back off from the fire, because they don’t like what they see in themselves. And if we don’t keep letting God do a deep work and do whatever it takes to keep the fire burning, it will eventually die down and you will lose it. Here are the areas that you must work on in order to keep the Fire of God burning in your life.

Hunger: You have got to stay hungry for God. If you feed your hunger, it will grow. Get rid of the things that distract your attention away from God. Put things and people around you who will feed your hunger for the things of God. Turn off the junk on TV and internet, stop hanging around dead and religious people, and be careful about what you hear and see. Protect your hunger.

Mind: You will have a battle to fight in your mind. Keep renewing your mind to the Word. Keep changing your thinking. Meditate on the Word and on things that are pure, righteous and true.

Heart: Protect your heart with all diligence for out of it flows the issues of life. Keep a humble, repentant, broken and pure heart. Your heart is the fireplace of God.

Prayer: Worship and fervent prayer (especially praying in tongues) are a key to keep the presence of God in your life. Keep pressing into God in prayer by asking for more of His fire.

Study of the Word: Stay in the Word and receive truth, correction, conviction and direction.

Obedience: Obey the written Word of God and the inner voice of the Holy Spirit. Keep sin out of your life. Be prompt to obey, because delayed obedience is disobedience.

Action: Keep releasing the fire through action. Fulfill the great commission and the fire will keep burning. If you are serving God with passion, the fire will keep burning.
